In the spectrum of a high-redshift quasar, large numbers of closely spaced absorption lines originating in hydrogen gas clouds along the line of sight. The principal absorption lines are the Lyman alpha line of hydrogen at a range of redshifts corresponding to the velocities of the intervening clouds. See also: Lyman series. |
